I read once that Julia Child was asked about her creative inspiration in the kitchen, and how she gets her inspiration and ideas. Her response was sooo validating. *paraphrasing here* She replied that she gets inspiration by rolling up her sleeves, getting messy, and doing the work.
Until I heard her say inspiration came through the process, I thought there was something wrong with me because all my inspiration arrived while getting messy. Never by epiphany.
What is inspiration? I define it as thus:
✨An idea that creatively solves a problem with dynamic possibility, and has the potential to inspire others.✨
The spark comes from the possibility.
So here is my process for finding inspiration:
•Place all the players on the table. Create a mood board, lists, folders of articles, anything that is relevant to the problem or project. Do not edit. Yet.
•Shuffle these things around like puzzle pieces. Where do things overlap? Where do they diverge. Take notes.
•Mentally process the pieces. Write ideas. Brainstorm. Record and capture the wild butterflies.
•Now edit. What is good for this project and what can be placed in a folder for another day?
•Massage the remaining elements. Experiment. Shape them.
•Solutions should now be emerging. Capture those potential solutions too.
•Don’t quit if the solution isn’t presenting itself. This is the hard part. Eventually, inspiration will emerge.
I’ve done this over and over. You may need to find your own process, but know that inspiration is part of the process of creating. And you will be amazed at what you find.
May you find the sparks you need! ✨🔥✨
